It is with great sorrow and heavy hearts that the family of Edwin announces his peaceful passing at the Sault Area Hospital in the wee hours of Monday, February 8, 2021, after a valiant nine-month battle with illness. He was in his 96th year. He has now joined the choir of heavenly hosts.
Beloved husband of Joyce (Tessier) for 70 happy years and much-loved and cherished father of son Rodney (Caroline) and daughters Barbara Dragicevic (Bob) and Donna St. Amand. He was greatly admired and will be sadly missed by his seven grandchildren, Noah St. Amand (Hannah Roth), Aimee Lukings (Justin), Kate Alldred (Jon), Hilary Dragicevic (James Brown), Gillian Currie (Steve McCann), Eli Currie (Brittani), and Drew Currie (Catherine) and will be forever beloved great-grandpa to Mia, Benjamin and Levon St. Amand, Charlotte Lukings, Frances and Alice Alldred, Ruby, Billie Rose and Georgia McCann. The youngest of six children in the family of Hector and Mary Eleanor St. Amand, he was predeceased by sisters Beulah Hess, Rena Entwistle, Stella Willson and his brother Hector. He is survived by his sister Norma McKinnon (late Gerald). Fondly remembered by his caring nieces and nephews, Uncle Edwin will be dearly missed. His and Joyce’s many friends and neighbours will also feel the keen loss of a special and fun man.
Edwin worked at Algoma Steel for 38 years as supervisor of customs and sales tax under the management of the purchasing department and corporate taxes. He retired April 1, 1983 and during his nearly 38 years of retirement he remained a very active member of the United Church and served many roles on the Boards of John Wesley, Algoma Presbytery and London Conference. He had music in his soul and was a member of John Wesley United Church for 65 years, the Algoma Festival choir and was the harmonica player in the spirited church "Raggedy Band". He always awakened with a song on his lips and not a day went by when he wasn’t humming a tune.
In 1986 he was appointed Staff Associate with the Rev. Jim Thompson at John Wesley for four years. He also became a pastoral care visitor at the Sault Area Hospital as well as being known for officiating at several funeral services in his always caring, faith-filled manner. Edwin will forever be remembered for his kindness, his smile, his warm heart and generous spirit and his quick sense of humour. He was passionate about living and enjoying life to the fullest and even through the ravages of dementia, he never forgot his favourite words to live by: "Life is short and we haven't too much time for gladdening the hearts of those who are travelling with us—so be quick to love, make haste to be kind."
A private family service will be held with Nancy Ferguson officiating. You are invited to join in viewing the service at 3 pm on Thursday, February 18th, 2021 by going to www.funeraweb.tv and selecting Ed’s name. At a later date we will announce and be celebrating Ed’s life with his entire family and circle of friends who are not able to join us at this time.
The family wishes to thank the Bayshore nurses, Leah, Monica, Jeff and Cindy, for their professional and compassionate care of Ed for the last 3 years and during his time of greatest need. We also are grateful to the emergency and palliative care units at SAH, and Dr. Nicki Apostle and Dr. Karen Booth for their compassionate guidance and care. Many thanks to The Alzheimer's Society local branch who have been steadfast in their support and have been a very important part of our life since 2017.
Memorial contributions to Algoma Residential Community Hospice (ARCH), the Alzheimer Society, the Sault Area Hospital Foundation, or a charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated by the family.
