George R. Savaria, 73, of West Springfield, was Called Safely Home on Thursday, February 4, 2021. He passed into Eternal Life at Mercy Medical Center in Springfield surrounded by the care and comfort of his loving family.

He was born in Springfield on June 13, 1947, the beloved son of the late Theodore G. and Gertrude T. (St. Amant) Savaria. He was raised on Pasedena Street in the Forest Park section of Springfield, graduated from the former Cathedral High School in Springfield in 1965 and moved to West Springfield in 1971 where he lived the remainder of his life.

He served his country in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War aboard the USS Vogelgesang and the USS Tutuila and attained the rank of Radarman Second Class. He received the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal.

He furthered his education and received an Associate's Degree from Holyoke Community College and attended the College of Our Lady of the Elms in Chicopee. He was employed for many years at New England Telephone and Telegraph Company, New England Telephone, Nynex and Bell Atlantic and retired as a Manager from Verizon.

He was a communicant of Saint Thomas the Apostle Church in West Springfield where he served as a Eucharistic Minister, an Usher and Senior Altar Server for Funerals.

An avid golfer, he would travel anywhere to golf with his friends and also worked part-time at the Ranch Golf Club in Southwick. Above all, he loved spending time with his family and his many friends.

He leaves his beloved wife and soul mate, Cynthia A. (Baribault) Savaria. They were married on November 13, 1971 at the Cathedral of Saint Michael the Archangel in Springfield and were blessed with over 49 years of happiness together. He also leaves his two loving sons, David G. Savaria and his wife, Emily, of Medway and Joseph B. Savaria and his wife, Kristen, of Longmeadow; his five cherished grandchildren, Lillian K. Savaria, Benjamin J. Savaria, Nora K. Savaria, Andrew J. Savaria and Lauren E. Savaria; his dear sister, Jacqueline Watson of Ocala, FL; and his many dear cousins, numerous friends and extended family members.

His Funeral will be held on Thursday, February 11, 2021 beginning at the St. Pierre - Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, (413-737-1177) 7 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, MA 01107, (funeral home will open at 10 a.m.), followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 a.m. at Saint Thomas the Apostle Church, 47 Pine Street, West Springfield, MA 01089. His Committal Service with United States Navy Military Honors will be private at the Massachusetts Veterans' Memorial Cemetery in Agawam. His family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday, February 10, 2021 for a WALK-THRU Visitation on Wednesday, February 10, 2021 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Please note that masks are required, social distancing must be observed and funeral home and Church attendance are limited due to state regulations.
