Leo J. St. Amand, 88, of Worcester, passed away in his home on Wednesday, August 4, 2010, surrounded by his loving family.

Leo is survived by his son, James L. St. Amand of Centerville, MA; his daughters, Kathleen A. Dolan and her husband Garrett of Stratham, NH and Mary A. McGrath and her husband William of Worcester; his cherished grandchildren, Daniel and David Dolan, Christopher and Jason St. Amand, and Michael and Kelli McGrath. Leo is also survived by his sisters, Cecile Catterson and Jane Gemma of Rhode Island and Florence Hayes of Worcester; and his brothers, Francis St. Amand of Worcester and Edward St. Amand of Auburn. His loving wife of 63 years, Kathleen (Mahoney) St. Amand, predeceased him on June 22, 2010. He was also predeceased by his parents Joseph and Marion (Nolet) St. Amand; brothers, Lucien, Albert and George St. Amand; and sisters, Theresa St. Amand, Irene Harper, Anna Garlic and Alice Gozdur.

Leo was born in Worcester on March 14, 1922. He graduated from Worcester Boy's Trade. He married Kathleen Mahoney on November 30, 1946. He worked as a Tool and Die Maker at Crompton & Knowles in Worcester for 39 years and then at Sem-Tec, Inc. until his retirement in 1987.

A highly decorated Veteran of World War II, Leo served as a Radio Operator and Door Gunner with the 8th Army Air Corps. His squadron of B-17 Bombers was responsible for attacks on enemy infrastructure. His plane was shot down over Germany and he survived as a Prisoner of War for 14 months. He was a strong supporter of Veteran organizations, with memberships that included The Disabled American Veterans, The Central Mass Chapter of Ex-POWs, The American Legion Post #288, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Worcester Veteran's Outreach Center.

Leo was also an avid golfer and bowler and a member of the Pine Ridge Country Club Golf League and the Auburn Senior Bowling League. He was a long-time communicant of St. Charles Borromeo Church of Worcester, and a member of the Retired Men's Club of Greendale. Leo was devoted to this family and brought much laughter and joy to all who knew him.

Calling hours for Leo will be held on Sunday, August 8, from 3-5 PM at Callahan & Fay Brothers Funeral Home, 61 Myrtle Street. A funeral Mass will be held on Monday, August 9 at 10 AM at Blessed Sacrament Church, 551 Pleasant Street. Interment will be at Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton.
