Avis de décès : M. John Raymond Jr St. Amand (- 2007-10-31)

St. Amand, John Raymond Jr. - (age 64) of Lunenburg County, NS passed away October 31, 2007 surrounded by family and friends following a courageous battle with cancer.

He is survived by his loving partner, Marilyn Keddy; sisters Priscilla Harding, Doris-Jean and Ruth; brother Dwight (Patti); aunts Carolyn Brimmer, Doris Loveless and Doreen and Rita, uncle Raymond Franklin and many loving cousins, nieces, nephews and their families. Predeceased by his parents John Raymond (1920-1971) and Hilda Bernice (nee Franklin) St. Amand (1921-1971).

Received an MA in Sociology ('72) from Dalhousie University, where he taught from 2000 to 2006. John was named Lineman of the Year (football) for Dalhousie and the Halifax Buccaneers, was first violist with the National Youth Orchestra, and played viola and clarinet in orchestras and bands in Brantford, Kitchener, PEI and Nova Scotia. He was also an accomplished viola fiddler. John first taught Sociology for 12 years at Mohawk College in Hamilton. Inspired by Madeleine Parent and J.B. McLachlin, John then committed his life to the goal of a strong, all-Canadian grass-roots social union movement. For the next 30 years John led campaigns for the CCU (Canadian Confederation of Unions) and the CAW (Canadian Auto Workers) with mine and railway workers, 'pink ghetto' workers in the communication trades and call centers, and with childcare and other public/private sector workers in Atlantic Canada and across Canada. John lived, practiced and taught the values of grass-roots all-Canadian social unionism. He deeply touched the lives of those who worked with him and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Donations in John's memory may be sent to the 'John St. Amand Bursary', Confederation of Canadian Unions, P.O. Box 1117, Station B Ottawa, ON K1P 3R2.
