Philip "Pete" Cyr, 83, died unexpectedly Feb. 6, 2007, at a Presque Isle hospital. He was born Nov. 17, 1923, in Van Buren, the son of Donat and Yvonne (St. Amant) Cyr.
He was a communicant of St. Bruno-St. Remi Parish and a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 1635 and the Fourth Degree Assembly of Van Buren. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a life member of the American Legion, Levasseur-Farrell Post 49 of Van Buren. Pete was a former director of the Van Buren Housing Authority and a member of the Van Buren Fire Department for a number of years, as well as an active member of Club 17 at Long Lake. He was an instigator of many positive projects that would come to better his community in which he truly believed and held much optimism. As a professional carpenter and crafter, Pete envisioned Van Buren to return to the growth level the community enjoyed in the 1930s and 40s. In 1965, he established Cyr Building Supply, Keegan, later known as Van Buren Trustworthy and now continues to operate as Van Buren Hardware.
He is survived by three daughters, Philippa Daigle and her husband, Daniel, of St. Leonard, New Brunswick, Judy Marquis and her husband, Ray, of Keegan, Pat Picard and her husband, Michael, of Windham; two brothers, Roland Cyr of Caribou and Donat Cyr of South Carolina; and one sister, Yvonne Walls of Williamsburg, Va. He also leaves eight grandchildren, Michel, Denis, Philip, Lynne, Ken, Scott, Angie and Nicky; eight great-grand-children, many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Marcella (Ouellette) Cyr in 2005; and two sisters, Margaret Jalbert and Val Jiudice; two brothers, Aurele Cyr and Lionel Cyr.
Relatives and friends may call 9 a.m. Saturday until time of service at the Ouellette-Thibault Funeral Home, 118 High St., Van Buren. A funeral Mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. Saturday at the St. Bruno-St. Remi Catholic Church. Spring interment will be at the parish cemetery.
