Roland J. St. Amand, 89, of Fitchburg, died Thursday evening in his home after an illness. Mr. St. Amand was born on Dec. 24, 1915, in Leominster, the son of Louis and Ernestine (Bissonnette) and has lived in Fitchburg most of his life.

He worked as a driver for the former James River Paper Co. for 26 years, retiring in 1980. He was a member of the Senior Citizens Bowling League. He also enjoyed going to the dog and horse track. He was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Church in Fitchburg.

He leaves his son, Ronald and his wife, Fay St. Amand, of Monroe, N.C.; his three daughters, Ellen Benoit and Denise Skidmore, both of Fitchburg; and Debra A. Roux of Clinton; nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. His wife of 53 years, Lillian (Gagne) St. Amand, died in 1991. Two sisters predeceased him, Annette Kimel and Yvonne Bernatchez, both of Fitchburg.

A graveside service will be held on Monday, June 6, at 10 a.m. in the Pieta Chapel in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Fitchburg. There are no calling hours. The Lavery-Chartrand Funeral Home, 99 Summer St., Fitchburg, is directing the arrangements.
