St. Amant, Lawrence James, 76, of Dover passed away on May 20, 2001.
He is survived by his beloved spouse of 58 years, Marie Elaine Boudreaux St. Amant; two daughters, Bernadette Wold of Wake Forest, N.C., Laura A. Davis of Tampa; four sons, John of Pensacola, David and Timothy of Tampa and Joe of Port St. John; three brothers, Jack of Seffner, Robert of Lithia, Alfred of Brooksville; and three sisters, Mary Wilson of Zephyrhills, Edith Tobul of Madison, Ohio, and Rosalie Garofali of Livonia, Michigan; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Born in Tampa in 1924 he joined the U.S. Army in 1940 at the age of 16. Lawrence served in the U.S Army, 7th Armored Div. from 1940 to 1945. He received the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Purple Heart, LaCroix de Guere, Combat Infantry Badge, EAMATO Medal and Good Conduct Medal. He served with General Patton in the 3rd Army during campaigns including Falaise Pass, Chartres, Metz, Rheims and Ardennes. He served under General Montgomery in the 1st Army during St. Vith and Rhyne Valley Germany Campaigns. He received the Purple Heart from a shrapnel wound during action at Rheims. A Silver Star was awarded for Gallantry in Action at St. Vith, this for rescuing a wounded man from enemy fire. He was Honorably Discharged from the Army after the defeat of Germany, and later re-enlisted in the Air Force, retiring after 20 years of service. He served overseas in Korea, receiving the Korean Service Medal, then later in Morroco. U.S. Army duty included Camp Polk, Ft. Benning, Ft. Gordon, and the American European Theatre of operations. His Air Force duty included MacDill, Limestone, Andrews, Griffiss, Chenault and Carswell A.F.B. Lawrence retired from Inactive Reserves in 1971 at the rank of Master Sergeant.
After retirement, he worked as an electronics technician at GE St. Petersburg, then with LINK Group Simulator during the Gemini and Apollo space programs. He retired from his civilian work in 1975, settling in Dover where he built two houses and raised his orange grove.
He was a life long Catholic and was a member of St. Clement Catholic Church.
The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. on May 22, 2001 at Haught Funeral Home in Plant City. Following the visitation, a rosary will be led by the Reverend Monsignor John Scully at the funeral home. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on May 23, 2001 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church located at 4450 County Road 579 in Seffner with interment at Pelote Cemetery in Lithia.
